Pilates is a low impact mind-body workout consisting of conditioning exercises that strengthen whole body with control, with particular emphasis on moving from the core. Similar to yoga, it also works on flexibility and balance. The mindful nature of Pilates promotes good body awareness and postural alignment of the whole body which leaves you feeling refreshed and energised.

Here at Thrive, we offer small classes and 1:1 or 1:2 Pilates which are guided by Diane, a senior physiotherapist with an expert knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and a unique understanding of how the body moves. Therefore, you can be assured that you are performing the exercises safely, effectively and modified to the appropriate level for you.

Diane teaches modified Pilates exercises pioneered by the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) which are adapted from the original Joseph Pilates series. This adapted form of traditional Pilates exercise is suitable and beneficial for almost everyone, including those of you who wish to improve your general well being, enhance sports performance or optimise your recovery from injury.

We utilise a range of small equipment such as the Pilates circle, soft ball and resistance bands to modify the exercises – these are great if you like a challenge!

Ante- & post-natal Pilates

Pilates is also a very safe & effective form of exercise during & after pregnancy. In the earlier stages of pregnancy e.g. during the first and second trimesters, you may wish to join in the Pilates class held on Wednesday evenings at 7.15pm where appropriate modifications would be given to you where needed.

An alternative option for a more personalised experience would be 1:1 Pilates sessions which include an individualised assessment & a tailored exercise plan, specific to your needs. Modified Pilates exercises are known to provide a number of positive benefits & are commonly used in women’s health physiotherapy.

If you have recently had a baby, Pilates is a great form of exercise to help to assist with your recovery from pregnancy and childbirth. Benefits include improving abdominal recovery and pelvic floor muscle strength and control. Generally speaking, Pilates would be suitable to begin after 6 weeks (or 8 weeks onwards if you had a C-section) once you’ve been given the go-ahead by your GP. At Thrive, we would be happy to offer you 1:1 sessions to assist with your post natal recovery.

If you would rather attend Pilates in a class setting, we would recommend you sought out a specific post natal class particularly in the first few months post-natally. However, as your strength begins to progress, you could join our generic Pilates class on a Wednesday evening.”
